Oklahoma CLE Requirements and Carryover Rules

Oklahoma CLE Requirements and Carryover Rules

As an Oklahoma attorney, staying compliant with the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) rules doesn't have to be a last-minute scramble.

Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or newly admitted, understanding the nuances of the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s requirements is essential for maintaining your license in good standing.

The Basics: What You Need Every Year

In Oklahoma, the compliance year runs from January 1 to December 31. Under the Rules for Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (Title 5, Ch. 1, App. 1-B), active members of the Bar must complete:

  • 12 Total Credit Hours: At least 50 minutes of instruction equals one credit hour.
  • 2 Ethics Credits: These must be specifically approved for legal ethics, professional responsibility, legal malpractice prevention, or mental health/substance use disorders.

Deadline Note: All credits must be earned by December 31. You then have until February 15 to ensure they are reported to the MCLE Commission to avoid late fees.

The Flexibility of Carryover Hours

One of the most attorney-friendly aspects of Oklahoma’s rules is the ability to "bank" extra work. According to MCLE Rule 4 and Regulation 3.7, if you earn more than the required 12 hours in a single year, you can carry forward up to 12 credits into the succeeding calendar year.

This includes carryover for ethics credits as well. For example, if you complete 4 ethics hours this year, you can carry 2 of those forward to satisfy next year's ethics requirement. Just remember: hours can only be carried forward for one year.

Sharing Your Expertise: The 6x Teaching Credit

Are you an expert in a specific niche of Oklahoma law? The MCLE Commission highly values the contribution of practitioners who educate their peers.

Under MCLE Regulation 3.3, attorneys can earn 6 CLE credits for every 50 minutes of instruction presented at an approved CLE activity. If you spend an hour teaching a seminar, you've already knocked out half of your annual requirement!
